The wayward pilots who overshot their target of Minneapolis airport don't have to worry about doing that again anytime soon. That's because the FAA has revoked the licenses for both Timothy Cheney of Gig Harbor, Wash., the captain, and Richard Cole of Salem, Ore., the first officer. The two pilots of Northwest Airlines Flight 188 had reportedly told National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators that rather than being in communication with air traffic controllers, they were on their laptops, working on crew schedules. At least, according to the two, they weren't napping.
However, they were still in violation of a number of federal aviation regulations, including failing to comply with air traffic control instructions and clearances and operating carelessly and recklessly.
The revocations are effective immediately. The pilots have 10 days to appeal the emergency revocations to the NTSB.

includes just the last 30 minutes of Wednesday night's flight, that portion after the pilots realized their error over Wisconsin and headed back to Minneapolis. More modern cockpit voice recorders store as much as two hours of information.
Thanks for the post Well I've seen other people do it, so I can understand it can happen, but not during something so important as flying, considering the amount of harm and damage it can do. What would've happened had they not woken up when they did and flown much further?
Pilots need stricter rules than everyone else because any mistakes up in the air have nowhere to go but down. At least on the water you can usually float a while...thanks for this usefull informations

Cheney and Cole told federal investigators that they "lost track of time" while working on personal laptop computers, the National Transportation Safety Board said. They became aware of their plane's position only after a flight attendant asked about the landing time

It happens from time to time. Especially on large taxiways at big airports where small planes share the main strip. The place where it happens a lot is at unmanned county airports, but since people are not there to witness it, it goes unreported.
Just like it says, Div. Pilots are worked to the excess, they get caught up in something that takes their mind off things, and.... not all commercial aircraft have the navigation systems that some smaller planes do
Were the pilots truthful during a five-hour process of answering questions from investigators at the National Transportation Safety Board this need to be probed otherwise no result would be achieved
They were playing World of Warcraft or poker or some other addictive, engrossing online videogame and they're hoping the airline will back them because they're seasoned pilots in great demand.
They should both be fired and lose their licenses for putting innocent lives at risk
Rather than being in communication with air traffic controllers, they were on their laptops, working on crew schedules. At least, according to the two, they weren't napping....might be they right but according to me they must give priority to communication with air traffic controllers..
