Did Sarah Palin Resign Over "The Iceberg Scandal?"

Sarah Palin announced on Friday she was resigning, within the next few weeks, as Alaskan governor. As she did so, there was no lack of theories on why she was making the move.

First, Nick Ayers, the executive director of the Republican Governor's Association with some GOP spin, told Fox News that in emails sent to him moments before she announced her resignation as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin discussed expanding the role she played in the Republican Party.

"Part of her decision is she wants to spend more time campaigning for candidates. She felt like she needed to make her colleagues around the country aware, so she had given us a brief heads up. We have known for a couple of days she was considering not running for re-election but it was news today that she had gone ahead and made the decision to fully step down and resign."
Besides campaigning for other GOP candidates, this could be a move that indicates Palin wants to focus on a Presidential run (we now start with 3 1/2 years left in the current Presidential term?).

Shannyn Moore, an Alaskan blogger, has her own theories:
For weeks the rumors of a criminal investigation against the governor have been brewing. They are rumors, but are swirling fresh again with Palin's resignation. I'm holding my breath for the other "Naughty Monkey" to drop. Another theory for the resignation is that the Palins would have to disclose the book deal as well as other financial details as governor. [...]

Rumors of an "iceberg scandal" have been circulating.
What's this Iceberg Scandal? Keep reading. Meanwhile, TPM's theory:
So what happened exactly? As I just mentioned in our editorial chat, this clearly happened so quickly that Palin hasn't even had a chance to come up with a coherent cover story for her resignation. Some context is probably helpful here, however. Remember that based on the public record, Palin is a wildly unethical public official, guilty at a minimum of numerous instances of abusing her authority as governor. And a lot of very damaging information has come out about her in the last few days -- though mainly embarrassing information about her character rather than new evidence of bad acts. I would not be surprised if this latest round of revelations shook something else loose that we haven't heard about yet.
Later in the day, TPM came up with this gold:
Wow. It just gets better and better. Apparently one of Palin's rationale's for resigning is that she would not stand by while so many taxpayer dollars were being spent investigating her.
Here's what BradBlog has to say:
Sources say embezzlement scandal, federal indictments may soon break concerning use of Wasilla Sport Complex building materials for Palin's home...
Get the Iceberg Scandal now?

Finally, The Daily Beast, emphasis mine:

One logical place to start looking is the affair that has Alaska political circles buzzing: an alleged scandal centered around a building contractor, Spenard Building Supplies, with close ties to Palin and her husband, Todd. [...]

Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide-open state.

SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin's snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice's Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.

Though Todd Palin told Fox News he built his Lake Lucille home with the help of a few "buddies," according to Barrett’s report, public records revealed that SBS supplied the materials for the house. While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin blocked an initiative that would have required the public filing of building permits—thus momentarily preventing the revelation of such suspicious information.

Just months before Palin left city hall to campaign for governor, she awarded a contract to SBS to help build the $13 million Wasilla Sports Complex. The most expensive building project in Wasilla history, the complex cost the city an additional $1.3 million in legal fees and threw it into severe long-term debt. For SBS, however, the bloated and bungled project was a cash cow.
If the reports are true, this is likely the end to Palin's political career, and with scandals surrounding other likely GOP 2012 presidential candidates (such as Gov. Mark Sanford of S.C.), the ranks of GOP candidates for 2012 continue to thin.

So the Palins steered contracts to a construction company as a reward for building their house in 2002, four years before Sarah even won the governorship? With ESP like that they should have been playing the lottery! What moron came up with this hit piece?

Umm 13 million for a sports complex in Wasilla while she was mayor might have had something to do with it.

"What moron came up with this hit piece?"

More than likely, SOMEONE WHO CAN READ AND THINK ANALYTICALLY AT MORE THAN A SECOND-GRADE LEVEL. Shmo.

Looks like the Democrat Media Propaganda Machine won again.

For all of those people celebrating the downfall of Good People,

HOW'S THAT HOPE AND CHANGE GOING FOR YOU?

What do you plan to do when they come after you?

Senator Obama funneled at least a million dollars from the state of Illinois to the University of Chicago Medical Center within months of his election in '04. Michelle Obama was employed there prior to his election & got a substantial raise in salary after the earmark became reality. All politicians are the same, GOP, Dem. or otherwise. Wise up.

Wow. Are you serious?

Maybe the writer of this piece should spend half their energy investigating Obama and the other tax evading Democrats for far bigger scandals of payoffs, sweet contracts to union buddies and outright theft.

Rezko ring a bell?

It never ceases to amaze me when the left comes up with all of these bits and pieces of garbage that have no basis. Without a doubt they are scared silly of Sarah Palin

Poor Sarah, I think those of us who have watched her have seen enough to know our country doesn't need any more of her or her soap opera. Keep watching we haven't seen nothin' yet. Pop the corn the movie is about to start.

I believe the lower 48 acts very condescendingly towards people from Alaska. It is a form of racism.

I'm still waiting for a politician to really go after Chase Bank. Now that is one way to pick up at least a million fans instantly.

It must be nice to live your entire life with blinders on. Ignorance is bliss. All political partys have scandal, but to have the perception that it's not their fault, it's the "left wing media" out to get them. Come on, are some of you folks really that stupid? Of course you are, how silly of me, that's how Shrub #2 dug himself in so deep for 8 yrs and drove all that he and his cronies could into the ground before quiting time 2009.

Is Sarah Palin different enough to know how to be different, and effective?

Who will take on Chase Bank?

I have, and I think I make a pretty good case for the dismissal of Jamie Dimon. Does Sarah even know what is happening to two million of Chase Bank's most trustworthy, never miss a payment customers?

If Sarah Palin does not know what Chase Bank is doing, then she is not differentiating herself from the other candidates.

Actually, if you have lived in Alaska and met/knew Sarah Palin, you would not be surprised at this news. Yes, she's a smart lady, but she got power hungry.

What is the difference between Sarah Palin's mouth and womb?

Besides "steering" things around -

-She had the SOL changed so no one could come forward to report past crimes - natives and the churches.

- she steered the local DA to NOT prosecute a rapist and trying to get someone to relocate.

Or tries to take out a federal agents kid - that is a doozie.

Or steers investigators away from a large trust fund.wink.wink.

Oh then there is Roger Percell and his "perplexed" look as the house that was suppose to burn down didn't!

Oops! More Palin orders gone bad!

Federal agencies are very interested!

And you cannot be a public official and sue anyone for the time frame they were in office!

Now after she is not in office?

Ask Harvard.com. Probably can.

Tip of the iceberg now begins...

and in a federal court room I will legally melt her to water!

I did wonder how they were able to afford a 1/2 million dollar home on a lake after their personal tax returns showed they could not afford it, even with her husband making $100,000 for one month's work for the oil companies on the north slope Her and Ted Stevens thought because their state was so far away no one would catch on to their corruption and misuse of power. Just goes to show Dem. or Rep. both parties are having one big party on our dime and we need to stop the party.
