Sasha, Malia Dolls Get New Names

Ty Inc., maker of Beanie Babies, has decided to rename two new dolls in its TyGirlz line after much criticism over their initial names: Sasha and Malia.

Naturally some of the criticism was aimed at Ty by the first lady, Michelle Obama, who is very protective of her daughters.

While Ty initially said "Marvelous Malia" and "Sweet Sasha" were not related to the Obama girls at all, stating:
"There's nothing on the dolls that refers to the Obama girls. It would not be fair to say they are exact replications of these girls. They are not."
However, a glance at the dolls (pictured) reveals that's probably not the whole truth.

The dolls are now named "Marvelous Mariah" and "Sweet Sydney," Chief Executive Ty Warner of Oak Brook-based Ty Inc. said in a statement Tuesday. He added that profits from the sales of the originally named dolls will be donated to charity.

"We appreciate the company's response to this matter," Michelle Obama's press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, said Tuesday.

Anyone who purchased the original dolls now has a collectible on their hands. You can assume these will show up on eBay soon, at a price much higher than their $9.99 MSRP.
