Chilling Video Shows Hit-and-Run Accident, Callous Bystanders

I've complained before about people only caring about themselves nowadays, and this is sure an example of it. Police have released a video of 78-year-old Angel Arce Torres being hit, run over, and left to lie in the street by bystanders who did nothing to help. The accident occurred on May 30th, and police hope the video will help them track down the offenders.

Watching the video, you can see it's around 5:45 PM in Hartford, Connecticut. Torres had just purchased milk at a local grocery. As he crosses the street (yes, it does appear he was jaywalking), he is struck by a dark Honda that was chasing a tan Toyota. The cars vanish down a side street after he is hit.

Several cars pass him while he lies in the street, and while bystanders gather, no one goes to help him. How callous has our society become?

Police Chief Daryl Roberts said, "At the end of the day we've got to look at ourselves and understand that our moral values have now changed. We have no regard for each other."

Yep, that's what I've said before.

Torres is paralyzed and remains in critical condition in Hartford Hospital. His son, Angel Arce, asked for help, as did the police, with the release of this video.

"My father is fighting for his life," he said. "I would like the public right now to help us in identifying the car and the person that did this."

It's obviously not a detailed video - but if anyone can help, please do. These people ran him down and left him to die. They deserve the same treatment, in my book.

hi there,

I appreciate totally, as to what angle you have written this piece, but let me tell you a personal story, that happened to me in Europe.

I was hit by a car in a roundabout (circle), as I was 'circling left', and the car entered on my right (oh! was on my racing bicycle).

It was the fourth or fifth time I've been hit by a car on my bike.

I ended up laying in the street, on my back, and was trying to convince myself that I wasn't gravely hurt (I wasn't).

YET, at least five Swiss or French men, leaped out of their cars, and ALL of them wanted to grab my arms, my legs, and pull me off the street!

Since we see a police car coming within 1 or more minutes, someone obviously had reported the 'crime', and I'm only suggesting that perhaps someone on the side, who might have helped, remembered that they shouldn't move someone...

I'm on slim ice there, because evidently no one stopped traffic perfectly, and certainly no one approached to comfort the victim, and assure him that help was on the way...

So thanks for writing a good piece on a sincere subject of our times.

I don't think the people standing around on the sidewalk were worried about moving or not moving the guy--especially the jerk who sauntered out and took some cell phone video of the old man lying there.

It's obvious he saw the car coming, did he just expect traffic to stop for him? I say it's a good thing: Let evolution take it's course. I'm mildly surprised to learn that he got to that age without learning that "if it comes down to you vs. a car, you lose".

And out of all the auto accidents I've had (none of which were faulted to me) I can give a fine guess that the driver of the suspected vehicle was more than likely an elderly man himself.

Did anyone else notice the cars were on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD when they hit him??

It seems like there’s been too many related things like this happen more and more frequently. Am I right? I have this friend that was just injured in a car accident, she had to hire a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer and everything, it was horrible. I guess all we can do is hope and pray for the best in people. We’ll see.
