Flicking Your Bic While Siphoning Gas? Not Too Bright

Grand Junction, Colorado, a hotbed of brainy thieves apparently. Showing just how desperate people have become with higher gas prices, a pair of thieves, Cody Sellards and Timothy Long, tried to siphon gas from Hank Ibarra's boat early Friday morning.

Actually, they were successful - to a point. While siphoning gas, they wanted to see just how much gas they'd managed to get into their gas can. Seeing as how it was 3 AM, they needed to use a light - er. Yep, a lighter.

People with some brains know that while gas itself is flammable, so are the fumes.

"It was pretty exciting," Ibarra said. "About 3:15, the neighbors called, my wife answered the phone … Of course I got woke up and she said, 'The boat's on fire.'" In fact, the boat wasn't on fire, the gas can in front of it was.

Police found the two at the hospital being treated for burns.

Sellards and Long face fourth-degree arson, theft and trespassing charges.

"If you haven't got better sense than to check gas with a lighter or match to see the level of what's in it, or how much is in the can, I guess you deserve what you get," Ibarra said.
