Teacher Assaulted in Classroom; Video Posted on MySpace
In Baltimore, Reginald F. Lewis High School teacher Jolita Berry (pictured) told a student to sit down after which the student attacked her, repeatedly hitting her while the student's friends cheered her on.
In the cell phone camera video, Berry is on the bottom. Other teachers broke up the fight, but when Berry went to the principal about the incident, she was shocked by the response.
"On one hand, she told me that she is sorry that this happened to me. But then she turned right around and told me that telling a student that I was going to defend myself was a trigger word. I triggered them."The principal did not report the incident to the police either, and Mayor Sheila Dixon commented on that fact. "I think that principal might need to be disciplined, because no teacher should be disrespected in the classroom," she said.
Berry is afraid to return to school.
If you watched the season of the wire that centered around Baltimore schools, it seems that season didn't exaggerate, or perhaps even understated the problems in Baltimore schools.

What the hell is wrong with these kids? Haven't their parents taught them how to behave like respectable people? Beating up a teacher? I mean seriously wtf is that? And the principal needs to be fired, "trigger" word? pfft I dont care what she said, she did not deserve to be beaten by some hoodlum who has zero respect for their teacher or any other adult for that matter apparently. This person needs to be punished by the full extent of the law and whoever taped it and posted it on myspace/You tube whatever also needs to be prosecuted and what the hell is wrong with the rest of the kids, just watching and not going to get help. Its absolutely disgusting.
Can't say we didn't see this coming. What are we really teaching these kids? I work in the school system at a Title One school (lower income zone 50% or more on free meals) and we teach these kids on a daily basis that it’s ok to break the rules and face no consequences. I watch every day as parents drop off their kids driving a Lexus, Beamer, or Hummer and the kid walks in and eats free breakfast and lunch because the parents claim they don’t make enough money to pay $1 a day for their children’s meals. Meanwhile driving a $600-$700 a month car payment to drop them off in. Kids cause fights or disrespect the teachers everyday and when they are referred to the administration all they get is a feel good speech and the good ole we won’t do that again now will we. Its ok we know you must be having a bad day, and then its right back to the classroom no consequences for their behavior that got them removed from the classroom in the first place. It’s just ridiculous the behavior of the administrators forget the kids or the teachers. The students are only going to do what you let them, and it’s been a long time coming of teaching people in general in the United States that you can just do whatever you want and face no consequences. Hell we made OJ more famous than his football days ever could have and showed it to the world on TV. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realize it’s only a matter of time before people start getting hurt and it gets out of hand. It's an everyday thing here at our school to watch students do just whatever they want and face no consequences. God forbid any bad publicity or a parent file a complaint because the administration enforced the rules. We couldn’t have that now could we?
I'll tell you where the parents were. They were at work! Parents think that they can expect television and computer games will raise their children while they can make an extra buck! Who is raising the youth of today? The media is! Yet, we wont do anything cause we like the media. We like the violent online games and movies so we'll just blame the parents!
