Grandfather High on Drugs Passes Out, Smothers Grandson

In Kentucky, David Cull, 50, passed out Wednesday night, apparently high on pharmaceutical drugs. When awakened on Thursday morning, they discovered he had been passed out on the chair where 2-month-old Xavien Cull had been laying.

Donna Cull, the grandmother, said "His lips were purple, and he had four purple stripes down the side of his face. I blew in his face and he wouldn't breathe. His hands were clenched, and he was cold."

David Cull was booked on a charge of reckless homicide. The Culls had originally had custody of both Xavien and his 5-year-old sister, but Child Protective Services came and took the granddaughter away and placed her in the custody of other relatives.

Dealing with cronic pain is only understood by those who have it. Maybe David Cull was simply medicated to the point of being able to sleep (the only real way to escape cronic pain). Where was the gradmother in all of this? Why isn't Donna Cull charged with anything? This is a tradgey for the baby and the family. I do not mean to minimize, but "reckless homicide" is a gross over reaction.

This does not sound like the grandfather was intentionally using the drugs to get high. The use of the term "high" to describe his state is therefore highly prejudicial. This could have just as easily been caused by an adverse reaction to the medication or an accidental admixture of medicines causing a systemic but temporary shutdown. The charge of "reckless homicide" seems to be more of an easy way out, blame them for abuse and not have to investigate any further. I feel terribly sorry for this couple, they've lost their grandson, their granddaughter has been taken away from them, and they will have to deal with the label of "baby-killers" due to the homicide charge, even if it is cleared. This is a horrible, tragic accident. Do we really need to punish the grandfather through the judicial system? Isn't this already punishment enough?

Sad story. I take many meds for constant back pain. Sometimes the meds knock me out so I can see how an accident could have happened here.

David cull was not using pain medication just for pain. He habitually abuses drugs and achohol has for years! He may have gotten a doctor to prescribe the medication, which is not difficult, but using them as prescribed did not happen. I also would like to know where the grandmother was in all this. the only ones at home at the time were the grandfather, grandmother, infant and five year old. Who laid an infant in a chair and left him?
