This is why I love the NPR show, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. This weekend they had White House Press Secretary Dana Perino on during the Not My Job part of the show, and she admitted she didn't know what the Cuban Missile Crisis is.Unfortunately, as she is appointed, not elected, I can't make a joke about "these are the people we elect?" I could say, "these are the people appointed by the people we elect?"
She indicated last week she was asked about the Cuban Missile Crisis in reference to President Putin's comparison of the U.S. missile defense shield program to the Cuban Missile Crisis. From the show:
"I was panicked a bit because I really know about ... nothing about ... the Cuban Missile Crisis. It had to do with Cuba and missiles, I'm pretty sure."
She admitted he had to ask her husband and he shook his head.
I have to admit she has a decent sense of humor, even about the mortgage hotline goof by Bush last week. She also admitted her husband has told her not to talk to him in her "White House voice." She wouldn't demonstrate the voice for NPR, though.
Unfortunately, she didn't win for her contestant.

Who cares what she knows , she is not pat of the decision making process, her job is logistical and Public Relations. You want a Press Secratary ( who like any other PR 'spokeperson' ) can set up adn handle the press adn who can repeat the message that you and your support ( wether it be a pres advisor, an investigator, or a board of directors) have decided the public should know about a specific situation at a specific time.
oobjhyI care that Perino didn't know what the Cuban Missile Crisis was. As a Naval Veteran who was on that blockade, sitting on top of a Russian submarine; I care! That is the trouble with this country today. They are forgetting what took place in history. Yes; we that were there, (approx 50,000 took part)and we are history. Remember what Veterans did for this country.
So what? The Cuban Missle Crisis was an obscure incident that occured more than twenty years before the fall of the Berlin wall, and capitalism and globalization asserted their superiority over any other form of ecoomic organization.
Besides, what has the Cuban Missle Crisis to do with "feel good" and "shopping?"
Perino has to be in the dark to be the press secretary for this administration because any informed person with a conscience could not defend the insurmountable amounts of corruption that this administration is involved in.
She's great to look at. I guess that is the important thing to remember. Ron Paul 2008!

Excuse your ignorance, those who say that the Cuban Missile Crisis was a minor historical event. The crisis could have led to a nuclear exchange with extraordinary consequences on a global scale. Excuse your ignorance, those who believe that it's OK for the public rep (the voice) for the White House not to know about that crisis. Only recently, Bush has twice mentioned WWIII, and every citizen (not to mention a rep for Bush) should see the direct link between the crisis and Bush's current rhetoric.
It is amazing that a PR spokeperson for a Republican administration is not knowledgable about the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is generally acknowledged that President Kennady escalated that event perhaps because of his youth and inexperience. You'd think she whould be ready to make some political hay for her party! That is where the question of competence lies.
A knowledge of history is fundemental to a good education. It is essntial to a great education. I assume she had niether.

Included in this experience was service to a state Rep and Senator; 2 Governors; a US Rep and a US Senator ALL REPUBLICANS).
I have worked on campaigns such as involving Goldwater; Nixon; Ford; Baker; Connolly and ultimately Reagan; and I assure you that each of these campaigns attempted to attract the best and the brightest --- and certainly would not have as their spokesperson anyone who did not exemplify the best and the brightest -- who was capable of contributing to the crafting of the message; and not just parroting a message like an empty shell.
So before you go to that dumb downed place to reach for a meaningless label – I already know that you have no clue as to what it takes to be a citizen guardian of our ever so fragile republic.
And oh yes: I am quite sure that I have stuffed more envelops and knocked on more doors and manned more phone banks for our Republic then you have – so put that label of yours back in whatever dark place you pulled it out of.
